Vietnam has been named the most affordable place to live in the world for the fourth year in a row, according to InterNations’ Expat Insider 2024 survey. And that’s no surprise!
In the annual report, Vietnam proudly tops the Personal Finance Index. How did they come to this conclusion? InterNations asked expats to rate three important factors on a scale of one (very poor) to seven (very good): the cost of living, satisfaction with their financial situation and whether their income is enough for a comfortable life.
Vietnam scores phenomenally on affordability, with a whopping 86% of expats rating costs positively—that’s more than double the world average of 40%! But that’s not all: in fact, half of expats surveyed consider the cost of living in Vietnam to be “very good,” well above the world average of 12%.
And let’s be honest: life in Vietnam has much more to offer than just a friendly wallet. Only 3% of expats cite financial reasons as the main driver for their move. Many expats are particularly attracted by the excellent work-life balance. Vietnam jumped in the job satisfaction rankings, from 24th place last year to 3rd place in 2024. And you know what’s even better? Less than half of expats work full-time!
But life in Vietnam also has its challenges. The country ranks 40th out of 53 destinations in the Quality of Life Index, mainly due to low scores in the field of Environment & Climate. Expats are concerned about air quality, busy city environments and the availability of green products and services.
In addition to Vietnam, the Expat Insider 2024 report shows nine other countries where you can live comfortably without too much financial stress. Asian countries are well represented with six of the top 10 positions, and Latin America is also in the running with Colombia, Panama, Mexico and Brazil.
