What is Workaway?
Workaway is a platform that connects adventurous pioneers with local hosts domestically and internationally who need volunteer help. Each host has their specific needs, often assistance with daily tasks.
For example, you can help hosts in animal shelters, farms, beekeeping, sailboats, hostels, or diving schools. This type of work is ideal for giving back to the country you visit and for learning new skills and cultures.
What does a Workaway adventure look like?
We’ll take you through our personal experience.
On the platform, we contacted a host who needed help at his diving school in Mexico. We were able to visit immediately whenever we were in the area; he still had plenty of space!
We opted for a diving internship. During our one and a half week stay, we assisted at the diving school and, in return, were offered free accommodation at a diving house.
During the weekends, we enjoyed diving with other work-awayers, and as a bonus, we even received a discount on our diving certification! Pretty awesome, right?
I can hear you thinking: Nice! But isn't there a catch?
No, not really. On the platform, you can freely and unlimitedly search for work adventures. It’s very relaxed because it allows you to gain a lot of inspiration!
When you want to respond to a host, you do need to purchase a paid membership of about 30 euros for a year. This is the only payment you need to make.
Once you are a member, you can unlimitedly respond to hosts with whom you have direct contact.
So, you arrange the details with the host yourself: how long you’ll stay and when you can start. You’re the captain of your own ship!
Additionally, you also get access to extra features: connecting with other Work-awayers in the area, information about the destination, a backlog of places you’ve been and places you want to go in the future so they can also approach you.
