Venice currently employs 433 gondoliers who gracefully navigate tourists through the maze of canals in their elegant, black-painted boats. However, a dual crisis looms: tourist numbers continue to swell, and many seasoned gondoliers are approaching retirement. The city is actively seeking new talent to continue this historic tradition. We’ve previously written about adventurous jobs abroad, and this one certainly deserves a spot on that list.
How do you become a gondolier?
You might think becoming a gondolier is a walk in the park, but it’s not that simple. First, you must pass a pre-selection test that shows you can maneuver in and on the water. After that, there’s an extensive study program covering Venice’s art, culture, and history, along with the rules for navigating the lagoon. This will cost you about €400 for 30 hours of theory.
But that’s just the beginning! Following the theory comes the practical training. For an additional €400, you’ll get 10 hours of hands-on experience with seasoned gondoliers, learning to gracefully steer the boat with a single oar. Plus, you’ll undergo a medical examination to ensure you’re fit for the job, followed by a final test.
Is it worth it?
The job is physically and mentally demanding, requiring a knack for dealing with the public while staying relaxed. However, the rewards can be substantial. The city sets the rates, with €90 for a 30-minute ride before 7:00 PM, rising to €110 after that. It’s easy to see how gondoliers who manage several rides a day can earn a decent living.
Do you think you have what it takes? You must be an EU citizen, meet the requirements, and apply by August 27, 2024. Who knows, you might soon be paddling through the Venetian canals!
